It's been awhile since I used a blog to echo my thoughts and feelings on an impertinent world and its practices, but having survived an odd presidential election, two hurricanes, and mass shootings in Europe and Las Vegas, I find my moments of inspiration dwindling as I sit at peace by the Creekside. So, I am resurrecting this form of expression to offer my whimsical thoughts of despair, hilarity and caution as we confront the essence of our humanity in the form of the chaos we are reckoning with each day of our lives.
Sunday, a horrific act of violence and death was committed on a crowd of people who were gathered at a country music concert in Las Vegas. Insanity has been redefined in the motives and rationale that would encourage a man, who by any other observation was a typical gambler adorning the halls of casinos in Las Vegas, to perpetrate such a senseless act. Every day since the the occurence news outlets present the pictures and videos of the destruction and deaths of so many people. We live in an eternal news cycle of instant replay and rewind, as if we are starved for reminders of our nascent desire to kill! But, there it is.
The anti gun lobby wants instant repeal of the 2nd Amendment. The gun lobby insists it wasn't their fault the shooter was a wacko. Posts on Facebook and Twitter call for a constitutional convention to rewrite the amendment in question. Other posts say "pry my lifeless fingers off of my gun."
It's hard to imagine anything more controversial and argumentative than this debate, which surfaces whenever there is a mass killing. But, the gun lobbyists are going to buy their support through weak-kneed Republicans who enjoy winning their reelections and the fact that we will be legalizing all sorts of automatic gizmos to allow rapid fire of guns will be a boon to the arms makers of the world. When will the insanity end? When will people come to their wits and learn from experiences like this that the times have changed. The need for the 2nd Amendment in 1780 is not the same need today in 2017.
